Jane Kell is a British painter currently based in London. With a degree in the History and Theory of Art from Essex University, she developed a career in publishing and public relations, eventually becoming Head of Press at the National Gallery in London and Director of Public Relations at Phaidon Press. She is primarily an abstract painter and colorist who paints directly on to the canvas with no preliminary drawing. She works initially with thinned down paint to map out the space and then applies thicker impasto layers to build up the picture. A painting might be finished in one session, other times it might go through many stages and rethinks over many weeks. Her decisions are instinctive and spontaneous and can result in paintings changing dramatically during the process.
